Hello Everybody,

It was a short week, but it felt like two weeks with so much going on.  Summer is officially here.  This season brings a slow down in Internet traffic, but with the increasing numbers logging on for the first time, it will be interesting to see if our statistics even show a decrease.  

If they do, don't panic yet.  It's been the norm for the 4 years that I've been tracking statistics.  I don't see why this year would be any different.  I take this time as a breather and just know that it's the season for me to get outside and enjoy the summer too!

++Jesse Berst predicts 5 more Dot Com Failures

He's on the sensational side of the issue, but he does have some extremely valid points.  It's worth making a note.  I was surprised that Ask Jeeves, http://www.ask.com was on this particular list though.  I wasn't surprised to see that FTD flowers, http://www.ftd.com made it.  I suspect that 1-800-flowers tied up the online market early in the game and they are synonymous with buying online flowers.  The huge amounts of advertising dollars paid to AOL made sure of that.  

Read the full article to see who else made the list.  When you finish, feel free to take the morbid poll that asks you to predict which one you think will die first.  Yuck!  He's treating it lightly, but anyone who's ever been on the dying side of a Dot Com knows that it isn't a laughing matter.

No more excuses.  The price is right and the schedule it extremely convenient.  It's time to take that FrontPage 2000 or HTML class.  They even offer a beginning Internet class that teaches you how to use a search engine so that you get the results you want and in the fastest time.  I haven't taken any of these yet, but I'm going to make room in my schedule for one of the programming classes.  

There are hundreds of classes offered and all of them are free.

++FTC -  Privacy on the Internet

The FTC allowed the businesses on the Internet to set up Privacy Policies and to protect consumer information that is gathered online.  Unfortunately, only 42% of the Top 90 companies are abiding by the basic guidelines.  As such, the FTC feels that self-regulation simply isn't working and that they need to step in with some assistance to protect the privacy of consumers. 

If you collect data from your web visitors, this is a must read.  You need to make sure that you are complying.

++Corporate Travel Reservations - made direct

A new company, GetThere.com, has figured out how to connect corporate clients directly to hotel, airline and car reservations systems.  Using the web, it is possible.  This will cut out the Computer Reservations Systems (CRS), if they are able to pull it off.  

The article shows that the airlines, hotels and others are behind the company because this new company can provide the reservation system cheaper than existing alternatives.  It will cut out some pretty high transaction fees and increase profits for the hotel, airline and car rental companies.

While some companies are going under, others have simply withdrawn their original IPO plans.  Two dozen companies pulled their IPOs last month.  That's more than January, February and March combined.
