Hello Everybody,

I'll start with a shameless plug for CreativeWriting.com. :-)  I've been invited to speak at the North America Event, Meeting and Tourism Planning Expo!  So, if you are in the Boise, Idaho area on October 19 & 20th, come by and say hello.  Or, if you are in the Event, Meeting or Tourism industries, come by and attend all the seminars.

You can find out all about their FREE seminars at their web site.

http://www.eandee.net

I'm excited about the conference and looking forward to networking with all the industry professionals.   I'll probably make it a long weekend and enjoy some of the beautiful mountains and rivers that Idaho has to offer.

One festival that I wanted to attend, but will not, is the 30th Annual Ukulele Festival, in Honolulu, Hawaii.  It's on Sunday, July 30th, 2000.  If you are able to go, find Kathy Sakuma and tell her that I'm "there in my thoughts".  It should prove to be an exciting "open air" concert - so enjoy it for me if you can attend.  For more information:

Now...on to the news.

++Security Holes and Viruses

Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Outlook and Outlook Express have holes that will allow a virus to be sent by email in the "date/time stamp" INSTEAD of as an attachment.  That means that you do not have to open an attachment.  Simply receiving an email will unleash the virus.  It is anticipated that viruses are being written right now and will be out by the end of the week.

Microsoft has patches to fix both holes.  You need to go download these patches, if you haven't already.  About.com's Net Security Guide,  Jim Williams, explains the holes and provides download links to both patches.

++Cyber Squatting Doesn't Pay Anymore

A porno site was promoting it's domain name, barbiesplaypen.com and Mattel sued.  Mattel's concern was that their target market might think that this really was the Barbie Play Pen and that their young audience would go to a place not intended for their young eyes.  The courts agreed and the porno site has to quit using that domain name because of an infringement of Mattel's "Barbie" trademark.

++Cookies - Are they good or bad?

When you go to a web site, that web site might put a "cookie" on your hard drive.  That way, they can personalize the site for you when you come back.  They can also track your visits and provide you with advertising banners that reflect your movement on their web site.

Privacy experts have long complained that corporate businesses should not be able to track a visitor's habits on a web site.  Advertisers, however, LOVE cookies.  I like them because when I go to certain sites, it remembers my logon information and I don't have to retype it each time, but I don't care for the fact that companies are tracking me for market research.  The debate has been going on since they were first introduced in 1996.

Leave it to Microsoft to stir the pot.  Their newest version of Internet Explorer will allow users to delete all their cookies and will let them know if they are getting cookies from 1st party (the web site) or 3rd party (the advertisers).  This will allow the user to accept cookies from the web site (to remember log on information), but reject cookies from 3rd parties (the advertisers).  Obviously, advertisers are very unhappy.  However, consumer advocates are praising a step that was first requested in 1996.

++Dot Com Doom News

Moreover.com is keeping a page that contains the most recent news stories of failed Internet companies, layoff numbers and more.  The shake out is still going on and will continue through the end of the year.

Unfortunately, you'll find 15 articles, just in the past 4 days. :-(

++K-Mart takes the Blue Light Special one step farther

I was at on of the Big K-Marts the other day and right there at the check out was a free CD to sign up for their free Internet Service called bluelight.com.  What a marketing coup that is!

Business 2.0 sat down with CEO, Mark Goldstein, and asked him how this would effect small businesses, how they plan to compete with the mega site of Wal-Mart and what he thinks of the future of Business to Consumer web sites - at a time when others are going under.

Apparently, they are watching companies that have gone under, like eToys, and have taken steps to make sure that they don't make the same mistakes.  The conservative steps and outsourcing will allow them to keep a low overhead.  As always, another interesting article from Business 2.0
