++Clicking on the Logo
Did you know that if you click
on the logo, of a web site, that it takes you back to the home page? There's one
other thing about "clicking" and the Internet... Did you know that you
only have to click once on a link? There's no such thing as "double
clicking" on the Internet. :-)

++ICANN and new domain names
As you may or may not know,
there's an organization that is responsible for determining how the domain names
work and what they are. This organization is ICANN, Internet Corporation
for Assigned Names and Numbers.
The problem is that we're
running out of .com names. There are 20 million names in use. To
ease this burden, they reviewed 200 recommendations and approved 7 of
them. Here's the list:
.biz - for businesses
.info - for sites containing information
.name - for individuals
.pro - for professionals
.museum - for museums
.aero - for the aviation industry
.coop - for business cooperatives
The reason that they limited it
to 7 choices is because they aren't sure how well this will go over. If it
is successful, they'll introduce more domain name types in the future.
Now, for the real
question. Should you go out and buy a new one for your business?
First of all, you won't be able to do this until early in 2001 because they
aren't set up to create the new domain names yet. Second of all, if you
already own your .com name you're ahead of the game.
The first place people still go
when looking up a web site is .com. Then they will try .net. Then
they go for .org, especially if they are looking for a non-profit
organization. If you are really worried, it doesn't hurt to own several
versions of the same domain name and you can definitely do this. The
reason this was done was to allow for more domain names to become
available. So, if someone wanted creativewriting, but couldn't get it -
because I own it - now they can get creativewriting with any or all of these new
extensions. Will this hurt my business? There is that possibility,
but I don't know that I'm going to go out and buy all these domain names.
I still believe that everyone will go to the .com first.
Now, if my business name was
Pepsi, I might think about it. They have years of branding to
protect. Even so, think of how defeating this would be. If everyone
who owned a .com name bought all the versions of that name, then there would
still be a shortage. The addition of domain name extension would not have
solved the problem that it was intended to solve.
They are on the right track
with the aviation industry. This might be the way to go. Even though
Boeing owns their .com, they should go out and get boeing.aero. People
will get used to the industry extensions and know what extension to
use.
For businesses like the
Washington Post, it isn't as clear. Are they a .com, plus a .info, plus a
.biz? Who knows for sure. Maybe they would have to buy all of
them.
When deciding for your
business, think of the business and your level of branding. Are any of the
new domain name extensions important to your business? If so, then you
should purchase it when they become available. If you're like me, then
hold on tight to that .com name and keep it renewed... it's yours and it's
valuable.

++Renewing a Domain Name
Now that we know how valuable
our domain names are, we need to make sure that we never let a renewal pass us
by. NetworkSolutions is making it easier. You can now renew for more
than a 2 year period. Here's the break down:
1 year - $35.00
2 years - $70.00
3 years - $105.00
5 years - $175.00
9 years - $315.00
10 years - $350.00
You can use the link below and
your credit card to pay for your domain name for up to 10 years. If you
can afford it and believe that your business will be around for any length of
time, you should probably renew for as long of a period as you can.

++Netscape 6.0 is good for Web Developers
We've all looked at our web
sites on other computers and have been shocked to find that it doesn't look the
same in all browsers. What works in Internet Explorer 4.0 doesn't work in
Netscape 4.7. This should end - as soon as all Netscape users
upgrade to version 6.0.
Netscape has finally given up
their proprietary tags and their new browser promises to adhere to the WWW3
standards. It will be equivalent to the Internet Explorer versions of 4.0
and 5.0. Thank goodness.
For an in depth explanation of
the technical specifics, Web Monkey has laid all the information out.

++Slow Start to Christmas Shopping - Online
Shopping online for Christmas
is slower than last year. However, many companies following Internet
trends believe that we'll still exceed sales over last year. Most people
will shop at the same sites that they went to last year - even if they had
problems. Amazon.com will pick up more customers than Barnesandnoble.com,
ebay.com and toysrus.com combined.
Experts believe that the
Presidential election has our focus and that the holiday shopping season won't
start until after Thanksgiving. For many more statistics and predictions,

++Vulture Capitalists
With all the Internet start
ups, closing down, it only follows that there would be a group that would come
in a "help" liquidate these businesses. Right or wrong, these
groups are being dubbed as "Vulture" like because they swoop down, buy
the business with very little money, break up the assets and sell for a
profit.
This Business 2.0 article
explains how and why venture capitalists are willing to buy a
"dying/dead" Internet company.
